This study examines the spatial associations between gay(queer) geographies and gentrification severity in Montréal island from 2006 to 2016.
Using geoparsed addresses extracted from Fugues Magazines as representing gay(queer) commercial activities and Ding’s (2016) gentrification severity classification, a Bivariate Spatial Association (Lee’s L) analysis finds that although global spatial associations amongst the two variables are insignificant (Lee’s L = 0.0241, P-value = 0.0375), localized analysis around the historic “gaybourhood” of the Gay Village reveals a significant positive spatial association. This is exemplified by a 12 high-high tract cluster found in a 2 km radius from the Village centroid.
