3D Context Exporter (Calgary)

PLACE / Arts/Culture/Other
TYPE / GIS & Cartography
YEAR / 2026 [WIP]

Summary
Existing 3D datasets for Calgary are limited only to fill-extrusions; meaning that roof, facade, and terrain geometries lack high definition details.

By hosting 3D LiDAR datasets then serving it in 800m x 800m geographic chunks, architectural design teams could extract high-fidelity 3D contexts such as buildings (LiDAR), digital elevation models (DEM, at detailed 2m resolutions), trees, etc. as standard Wavefront .OBJ format. Wavefront .OBJs can be directly edited in Blender and/or Sketchup during feasibility/schematic design phases and architectural visualizations.

The Goal
To systematically extract 3D geospatial contexts at high resolution, for feasibility & schematic design.

The Context Exporter
vs. Traditional Exporters

Results in Sketchup

Extraction results in Sketchup, with high-fidelity 3D roof Geometry.
Can be shaded flat/smoothen to reduce triangulation artifacts.
Extraction results in Sketchup, triangulated, with DEM (2m geographic resolution)
